PROPERTIES: Productizing Multi-Family Housing

The Globizen team is working on a new build-to-core multi-family strategy that aims to “productize” new rental housing, starting in Toronto. What this means, more specifically, is that we are working to deliver high-quality and design-forward housing using a systems-based development approach — one that encourages construction repetition and constant optimization. This, of course, is not a new idea. But we strongly believe that the time is finally right for this kind of development approach. The construction sector remains — over more than half a century — one of the worst performing industries in terms of productivity. At best, it’s been flat. And part of this is because we’ve been hamstrung by restrictive planning policies and building codes. This is now changing as cities, all across North America, recognize the desperate need for more housing, and work to create opportunities for repetition and scale.
